Mara Sherman got her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Seeking some sunshine, she pursued her Ph.D. in molecular biology at UCLA, training with Mike Teitell. From there, she moved to the Salk Institute for postdoctoral training in the lab of Ron Evans, where she developed a strong interest in transcriptional regulation of the tumor microenvironment and the role of nuclear hormone receptors in this process. During her postdoctoral studies, she focused on pancreatic cancer, a disease she felt highly motivated to study for reasons both scientific and personal. Deciding that sunshine is unnecessary after all, she started her own lab in the department of Cell, Developmental & Cancer Biology at Oregon Health and Science University in the fall of 2016. As of January 2023, she is an Associate Member in the Cancer Biology & Genetics Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she continues to study the pancreatic tumor microenvironment in hopes of identifying new therapies to benefit patients.
