Caregiving for a loved one with pancreatic cancer is a challenging and continuously evolving role. Although it can be filled with rewards and joy, it can also be overwhelming and exhausting. Upon being diagnosed, there is a learning curve for both parties as the patient learns what they need and the caregiver learns what to expect throughout the treatment journey.
We are here to help navigate these complex waters and be a source of support for pancreatic cancer patients and their families. We are dedicated to helping those facing a diagnosis and creating valuable tools to assist both the patient, family member, and caregiver. We have an extensive library of resources. Advice for Caregivers
Time is of the essence to help people with pancreatic cancer move from shock to a place where they are present in the decision-making process of their care. This responsibility often falls on caregivers or loved ones who may face significant challenges and emotional strain. Being a caregiver is demanding, and it’s essential to prioritize your own well-being alongside the patient’s needs. Here are some tips for caregivers to help manage their responsibilities and maintain their health:
Ask for help – Learn to ask for and accept offers of help. It is important to be able to ask friends, family, or professionals for some assistance. Our Patient Support Services are here for you.
Find support – Talk with other caregivers, attend support groups, and most of all, know that you are not alone. Discuss, listen and learn from other caregivers and patients to understand both perspectives. Our Symposium Panel Discussion includes pancreatic cancer caregivers who share their experiences and what helped them maintain balance throughout.
Be the advocate – Health professionals often recommend that patients keep a health diary to detail symptoms and side effects they experience throughout treatment. Whether you prefer paper and a pen or an app, there are tools to help you track your health journey and take control. Create a list of questions for the physician, research treatment options and educate yourself on resources for the patient.
Understand your rights – As a caregiver, you have rights. Be aware of the Family and Medical Leave Act and what you are entitled to through your work to take time off and care for a loved one.
