PURPOSE
To create an intimate and inspirational day of education by bringing together clinicians, researchers, physicians, survivors, patients and their families.
ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
Our annual Symposium, held at UCLA, has become an educational and inspirational patient centered program that has integrated nearly 200 researchers, clinicians, patients, survivors and families to learn and discuss developments, personalized medicine, cutting-edge treatments and the progression of finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. In past Symposiums, topics have included oncology, surgery, psychosocial management, nutrition and integrative medicine, gastroenterology, genetics, basic science, and radiology. The programs are organized by Dr. Vay Liang Go, MD, PhD, Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board, and include a patient/survivor panel where patients share their story and answer questions about living with pancreatic cancer. There is no fee for attending this event.
HISTORY
Started in 2005, the symposium was designed to showcase information between the various research and treatment areas for pancreatic cancer. Seed Grant recipients from the Hirshberg Foundation presented final data and posters of their projects. While the symposiums have been very informative, the science presented has, at times, been difficult for the lay-person to understand. Beginning in 2008, the symposium was broken down into two parts: a full day session for medical professionals and a shortened program within the program for a “non-medical” audience. In 2013 the medical Symposium was held at the American Pancreas Association Meetings and continues to stay there. We created a symposium day program for patients, families and caretakers. Still presented in the same intimate format where the physicians talk with patients, we added a patient/survivor panel that brings inspiration and hope to all that attend. Providing patient support and prevention information for patients, survivors, caregivers and families affected by pancreatic cancer remains our focus for future symposiums.
